In 2024, the strength of our democracies against online disinformation campaigns will be put to the test – GretAi News

Disinformation, sharing false information to deceive and mislead others, can take many forms. From edited “deepfake” videos made on smartphones to vast foreign-led information operations, politics and elections show how varied disinformation can be. Hailed as “the year of elections”, with the majority of the world’s population going to the polls, 2024 will also be a year of lessons learned, where we will see whether disinformation can truly subvert our political processes or if we are more resilient than we think. The dissemination of disinformation, as well as misleading content and methods, is not always high-tech. We often think about s...... Read Full article on HadNews

How can we combat the alarming increase of AI-generated falsehoods spread by algorithms? – GretAi News

Image
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools are supercharging the problem of misinformation, disinformation and fake news. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and various image, voice and video generators have made it easier than ever to produce content, while making it harder to tell what is factual or real. Malicious actors looking to spread disinformation can use AI tools to largely automate the generation of convincing and misleading text. This raises pressing questions: how much of the content we consume online is true and how can we determine its authenticity? And can anyone stop this? It’s not an idle concern. Organisations seeking...... Read Full article on HadNews

Google says it removed over 170m fake reviews with new algorithm

Image
Google has said it blocked or removed over 170 million fake reviews that violated its policies in 2023. According to a recent blog post, the tech giant stated that this was over 45% more than in 2022. It also removed more than 12 million fake business profiles from its search engine, which they say is thanks to a new machine learning algorithm. “Last year, we launched a new machine learning algorithm that detects questionable review patterns even faster,” the company said, adding that it does so by “examining longer-term signals on a daily basis.” The California-based firm claimed that over 20 million community reviews of products and ...... How to empower youth to fight the threat of misinformation and disinformation

Image
The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2024 has issued a stark warning: misinformation and disinformation, primarily driven by deepfakes, are ranked as the most severe global short-term risks the world faces in the next two years. In October 2023, the Innovation council of Québec shared the same realization after months of consultations with experts and the public. This digital deception, which leverages artificial intelligence and, more recently generative AI, to create hyper-realistic fabrications, extends beyond being a technological marvel; it poses a profound societal threat. In response to the gap in effectively combat...... Read Full article on HadNews

Some people who share fake news on social media actually think they're helping the world

Image
Misinformation is the number one risk facing society over the next two years, according to the World Economic Forum. With key elections due in the US, UK and many other nations this year, an onslaught of political misinformation can be expected. Some of this material is distributed through paid advertising on social media, like the AI generated “deep fake” videos of British prime minister Rishi Sunak doing the rounds. However, we know that much of the spread of false material is due to the actions of individual social media users. Many people share political news online. Inevitably some of that news is false. Fake political news is, a...... Read Full article on HadNews
