Finnish parliament approves law to block asylum seekers at Russian border

Image
Finland's Parliament has approved a controversial new law that will allow border guards to deny entry to asylum-seekers arriving from Russia. The legislation, which was passed on Friday, aims to reduce the number of asylum-seekers entering Finland through the country's eastern border. Under the new law, border guards will have the authority to turn away individuals seeking asylum if they have already passed through a safe country, such as Russia, where they could have applied for protection. The Finnish government argues that this measure is necessary to maintain the integrity of the country's asylum system and prevent abuse of the process. ...... Read Full article on HadNews

Leanne Manas is a familiar face on South African televisions. Towards the end of 2023 the morning news presenter’s face showed up somewhere else: in bogus news stories and fake advertisements in which “she” appeared to promote various products or get-rich-quick schemes. It quickly emerged that Manas had fallen victim to “deepfaking”. Deepfakes involve the use of artificial intelligence tools to manipulate images, video and audio. And it doesn’t require cutting-edge technical know-how. Software like FaceSwap and ZaoApp, which can be downloaded for free, mean that anybody can create deepfakes. Deepfakes were initially used in the en...... Read Full article on HadNews

“I Died That Day” Lawmakers in the US are getting calls from dead kids

Image
Called “very strange indeed.” Lawmakers in the US are getting calls from dead kids, causing additional dilemmas in the legality issue of deepfakes. Commencing on the sixth anniversary of the Parkland school tragedy, which claimed 17 lives, a number of deepfake, automated calls from the kids who were killed are all part of an effort to increase public awareness of gun safety and advocate for stricter gun laws. However, the topic of this piece isn’t gun control; instead, it’s a pivotal point in artificial intelligence and the use of deepfakes to disseminate messages and communicate with the dead — but will this usage turn out to be illeg...... Montana’s Effort to Expand Religious Exemptions to Vaccines Prompts Political Standoff

Image
Montana lawmakers are in a standoff with the state’s health department over a package of sweeping changes to child care licensing rules that includes a disputed provision to allow religious exemptions to routine vaccinations for children and workers. Both Republican and Democratic legislators on the Children, Families, Health, and Human Services Interim Committee voted Jan. 18 to renew their informal objection to the proposed child care licensing rules, which the committee has blocked since November. The vote prevents the state’s Department of Public Health and Human Services from adopting the rules until at least March, whe...... Read Full article on HadNews
