Small Language Models: Apple, Microsoft Debut LLM Alternative

Image
Tech companies have been caught up in a race to build the biggest large language models (LLMs). In April, for example, Meta announced the 400-billion-parameter Llama 3, which contains twice the number of parameters—or variables that determine how the model responds to queries—than OpenAI’s original ChatGPT model from 2022. Although not confirmed, GPT-4 is estimated to have about 1.8 trillion parameters. In the last few months, however, some of the largest tech companies, including Apple and Microsoft, have introduced small language models (SLMs). These models are a fraction of the size of their LLM counterparts and yet, on many benchmarks, c...... Read Full article on HadNews

ChatGPT is now better than ever at faking human emotion and behaviour

Image
Earlier this week OpenAI launched GPT-4o (“o” for “omni”), a new version of the artificial intelligence (AI) system powering the popular ChatGPT chatbot. GPT-4o is promoted as a step towards more natural engagement with AI. According to the demonstration video, it can have voice conversations with users in near real-time, exhibiting human-like personality and behaviour. This emphasis on personality is likely to be a point of contention. In OpenAI’s demos, GPT-4o sounds friendly, empathetic and engaging. It tells “spontaneous” jokes, giggles, flirts and even sings. The AI system also shows it can respond to users’ body language and emot...... Read Full article on HadNews

Can AI read our minds? Probably not, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be worried

Image
Earlier this year, Neuralink implanted a chip inside the brain of 29-year-old US man Noland Arbaugh, who is paralysed from the shoulders down. The chip has enabled Arbaugh to move a mouse pointer on a screen just by imagining it moving. In May 2023, US researchers also announced a non-invasive way to “decode” the words someone is thinking from brain scans in combination with generative AI. A similar project sparked headlines about a “mind-reading AI hat”. Can neural implants and generative AI really “read minds”? Is the day coming when computers can spit out accurate real-time transcripts of our thoughts for anyone to read? Such tec...... Read Full article on HadNews

AI Prompt Engineering Is Dead

Image
Since ChatGPT dropped in the fall of 2022, everyone and their donkey has tried their hand at prompt engineering—finding a clever way to phrase your query to a large-language model (LLM) or AI art or video generator to get the best results or side-step protections. The internet is replete with prompt engineering guides, cheat sheets and advice threads to help you get the most out of an LLM.In the commercial sector, companies are now wrangling LLMs to build product co-pilots, automate tedious work, create personal assistants, and more, says Austin Henley, a former Microsoft employee who conducted a series of interviews with people developing L...... Google’s Gemini showcases more powerful technology, but we’re still not close to superhuman AI

Image
In December 2023, Google announced the launch of its new large language model (LLM) named Gemini. Gemini now provides the artificial intelligence (AI) foundations of Google products; it is also a direct rival to OpenAI’s GPT-4. But why is Google considering Gemini as such an important milestone, and what does this mean for users of Google’s services? And generally speaking, what does it mean in the context of the current hyperfast-paced developments of AI? Read more: Google's Gemini: is the new AI model really better than ChatGPT? AI everywhere Google is betting on Gemini to transform most of its p...... Read Full article on HadNews

What Is Generative AI? - IEEE Spectrum

Image
Generative AI is today’s buzziest form of artificial intelligence, and it’s what powers chatbots like ChatGPT, Ernie, LLaMA, Claude, and Command—as well as image generators like DALL-E 2, Stable Diffusion, Adobe Firefly, and Midjourney. Generative AI is the branch of AI that enables machines to learn patterns from vast datasets and then to autonomously produce new content based on those patterns. Although generative AI is fairly new, there are already many examples of models that can produce text, images, videos, and audio. Many “foundation models” have been trained on enough data to be competent in a wide variety of tasks. For example, a l...... Read Full article on HadNews

AI Spam Threatens the Internet—AI Can Also Protect It

Image
2023 wasn’t a great year for AI detectors. Leaders like GPTZero surged in popularity but faced a backlash as false positives led to incorrect accusations. Then OpenAI quietly tossed ice-cold water on the idea with an FAQ to answer whether AI detectors work. The verdict? “No, not in our experience.”OpenAI’s conclusion was correct—at the time. Yet the demise of AI detectors is greatly exaggerated. Researchers are inventing new detectors that perform better than their predecessors and can operate at scale. And these come alongside “data poisoning” attacks that individuals can use to safeguard their work from being scooped up against their wish...... Read Full article on HadNews

The Pros and Cons of Using Diagnosis Apps – GretAi News

If health is a fundamental human right, health-care delivery must be improved globally to achieve universal access. However, the limited number of practitioners creates a barrier for all health-care systems. Approaches to health-care delivery driven by artificial intelligence (AI) are poised to fill this gap. Whether in urban hospitals or in rural and remote homes, AI has the reach that health-care professionals cannot hope to achieve. People seeking health information can obtain it quickly and conveniently. For health care to be effective, patient safety must remain a priority. The news is filled with examples of novel applications of AI....... Read Full article on HadNews

AI tools produce dazzling results – but do they really have ‘intelligence’?

Image
Sam Altman, chief executive of ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, is reportedly trying to find up to US$7 trillion of investment to manufacture the enormous volumes of computer chips he believes the world needs to run artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Altman also recently said the world will need more energy in the AI-saturated future he envisions – so much more that some kind of technological breakthrough like nuclear fusion may be required. Altman clearly has big plans for his company’s technology, but is the future of AI really this rosy? As a long-time “artificial intelligence” researcher, I have my doubts. Today’s AI systems – particularl...... Read Full article on HadNews

Artificial intelligence needs to be trained on culturally diverse datasets to avoid bias

Image
Large language models (LLMs) are deep learning artificial intelligence programs, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The capabilities of LLMs have developed into quite a wide range, from writing fluent essays, through coding to creative writing. Millions of people worldwide use LLMs, and it would not be an exaggeration to say these technologies are transforming work, education and society. LLMs are trained by reading massive amounts of texts and learning to recognize and mimic patterns in the data. This allows them to generate coherent and human-like text on virtually any topic. Because the internet is still predominantly English — 59 per cent of...... Read Full article on HadNews
