Meta lowers WhatsApp's age limit in Europe, drawing critics' wrath

Image
Meta’s decision to lower the minimum age to use its WhatsApp messaging service is drawing fire from children’s advocates in the UK and EU. The move lowers ages from 16 to 13 in both territories; it went into effect as of April 11. Meta has announced that it is preparing to launch stricter safety tools to block children from receiving and sending nude images, the social media giant said in a blog post on Thursday. The tool, which will be available to all users but mainly aimed towards women and teenagers, will be an optional setting on both Facebook and Instagram and will also be active in encrypted messages. This follows criticism from the government and police after Meta decided to encrypt Messenger chats by default. It is a feature, Meta says, which is solely designed to protect users from either being sent or pressured into sending nude images, while an addit...... Read Full article on HadNews
