80% of Australians believe that addressing the risks of artificial intelligence is a critical global priority, urging government action.

Image
A new nationally representative survey has revealed Australians are deeply concerned about the risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI). They want the government to take stronger action to ensure its safe development and use. We conducted the survey in early 2024 and found 80% of Australians believe preventing catastrophic risks from advanced AI systems should be a global priority on par with pandemics and nuclear war. As AI systems become more capable, decisions about how we develop, deploy and use AI are now critical. The promise of powerful technology may tempt companies – and countries – to race ahead without heeding the risks. Our f...... Read Full article on HadNews

AI-driven demand for computer chips may lead to a transformation in global politics and security. – GretAi News

Image
A global race to build powerful computer chips that are essential for the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools could have a major impact on global politics and security. The US is currently leading the race in the design of these chips, also known as semiconductors. But most of the manufacturing is carried out in Taiwan. The debate has been fuelled by the call by Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT’s developer OpenAI, for a US$5 trillion to US$7 trillion (£3.9 trillion to £5.5 trillion) global investment to produce more powerful chips for the next generation of AI platforms. The amount of money Altman called for is more than the c...... Read Full article on HadNews

How can we combat the alarming increase of AI-generated falsehoods spread by algorithms? – GretAi News

Image
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools are supercharging the problem of misinformation, disinformation and fake news. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and various image, voice and video generators have made it easier than ever to produce content, while making it harder to tell what is factual or real. Malicious actors looking to spread disinformation can use AI tools to largely automate the generation of convincing and misleading text. This raises pressing questions: how much of the content we consume online is true and how can we determine its authenticity? And can anyone stop this? It’s not an idle concern. Organisations seeking...... Read Full article on HadNews

Open-Source AI Is Good for Us

Image
This is a guest post. For the other side of the argument about open-source AI, see the recent guest post “Open-Source AI Is Uniquely Dangerous.“A culture war in AI is emerging between those who believe that the development of models should be restricted or unrestricted by default. In 2024, that clash is spilling over into the law, and it has major implications for the future of open innovation in AI.Today, the AI technologies under most scrutiny are generative AI models that have learned how to read, write, draw, animate, and speak, and that can be used to power tools like ChatGPT. Intertwined with the wider debate over AI regulation is a h...... Read Full article on HadNews

Standards Matter for Cars, Plugs, WiFi—and AI?

Image
Artificial intelligence holds much promise for innovation and progress, but it also has the potential to cause harm. To enable the responsible development and use of AI, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recently released ISO/IEC 42001, a new standard for AI management systems. According to ISO, this standard “offers organizations the comprehensive guidance they need to use AI responsibly and effectively, even as the technology is rapidly evolving.”As AI has rapidly matured and broadly been rolled out across the world, there’s been a tangle of conflicting standards from big AI companies like Meta, Microsoft, and Googl...... Australia plans to regulate 'high-risk' AI. Here's how to do that successfully

Image
This week, federal Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic announced the Australian government’s response to the Safe and Responsible AI in Australia consultation. The response addresses feedback from last year’s consultation on artificial intelligence (AI). It received more than 500 submissions, noting “excitement for the opportunities” of AI tools, but also raising concerns about potential risks and Australians’ expectations for “regulatory safeguards to prevent harms”. Instead of enacting a single AI regulatory law like the European Union has done, the Australian government plans to focus on high-risk areas of AI implementation ...... Read Full article on HadNews
