Many of these demonstrations will focus on what humanity can do to stop fueling the damage. But while activists are amplifying the dire findings from scientists, you’ll likely see fossil fuel supporters attacking them on social media and TV. State-owned energy companies are among the world’s most polluting – putting a price on carbon could help

Image
Existing measures to cajole companies to decarbonise, with subsidies for renewable energy and carbon taxes, have failed to prevent global emissions rising. Does state ownership, particularly in the energy sector, make this process easier? State-owned energy firms that search for, produce and refine fossil fuels are among the most polluting organisations in the world. how to make sense of an unusual cold snap while the world is hotter than ever

Image
Earlier this year, the UK’s weather and climate service, the Met Office, announced average global temperatures in 2023 were 1.46°C above pre-industrial levels. This made it the hottest year on record, 0.17°C higher than the previous record in 2016. When the cold snap arrived, temperatures dropped to -14°C in the Scottish Highlands and -11°C even in England. Ten days later, a village in the Scottish Highlands reached a balmy 19.9°C, the warmest January temper...... Read Full article on HadNews

From New York to Jakarta, land in many coastal cities is sinking faster than sea levels are rising

Image
Sea level rise has already put coastal cities on notice thanks to increasing storm surges and even sunny day flooding at high tide. These challenges will continue to grow because global projections point to a mean sea level rise of at least one foot above year-2000 levels by the end of this century. However, many cities are facing another factor making them even more vulnerable to rising waters: land subsidence. The three of us – Pei-Chin Wu, Meng (Matt) Wei and Steven D'Hondt – are scientists at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography working with the U.S. Geological Survey to research challenges facing waterf......
