Making art is a uniquely human act, and one that provides a wellspring of health benefits

Image
When you think about the word “art,” what comes to mind? A child’s artwork pinned to the fridge? A favorite artist whose work always inspires? Abstract art that is hard to understand? Each of these assumes that making art is something that other people do, such as children or “those with talent.” However, as I explain in my book “The Expressive Instinct,” art is intrinsic to human evolution and history. Just as sports or workouts exercise the body, creating art exercises the imagination and is essential to mental as well as physical well-being. I am a professor of art therapy who studies how creative self-expression affects physic...... Read Full article on HadNews

6 ways you can use AI beyond generating text

Image
As more than half of Australian office workers report using generative artificial intelligence (AI) for work, we’re starting to see this technology affect every part of society, from banking and finance through to weather forecasting, health and medicine. Many people are now using AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to get advice, find information or summarise longer passages of text. But our recent research demonstrates how generative AI can be used for much more than this, returning results in different formats. On the one hand, AI tools are neutral – they can be used for good or ill depending on one’s intent. However, the mode...... Read Full article on HadNews

Brain scans of Philly jazz musicians reveal secrets to reaching creative flow

Image
Flow, or being “in the zone,” is a state of amped-up creativity, enhanced productivity and blissful consciousness that, some psychologists believe, is also the secret to happiness. It’s considered the brain’s fast track to success in business, the arts or any other field. But in order to achieve flow, a person must first develop a strong foundation of expertise in their craft. That’s according to a new neuroimaging study from Drexel University’s Creativity Research Lab, which recruited Philly-area jazz guitarists to better understand the key brain processes that underlie flow. Once expertise is attained, the study found, this knowledg...... Read Full article on HadNews

Now AI is outperforming humans when it comes to creativity

Image
Artificial Intelligence gains another win over humans, as a new study suggests it can have ‘creative thought.’ In a study conducted by PhD students at the University of Arkansas, 151 people were pitted against ChatGPT-4 with the aim of measuring divergent thinking. This is often thought to be a sign of creativity and imagination, as it involves a thought process that is used to generate ideas and explore possible solutions to a concrete or abstract issue. In the study, the multimodal language model created by OpenAI was found to provide more ‘original and elaborate answers than the human participants.’ The first take involved people co...... How to write a love song – three tips for beginners from a songwriting expert

Image
Love and romance are unquestionably the dominant lyrical themes of popular music. In fact, research in 2017 found that “love” has been the most common theme for pop song lyrics in every decade since the 1960s. If you’re trying to write a love song for the first time, you might not know where to begin, or cringe at the thought of being schmaltzy. But love songs don’t necessarily have to be romantic. In the 2011 song Suck it And See, Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner proposed that the ultimate compliment to bestow upon a loved one is to say they’re “rarer than a can of dandelion and burdock”. An even stranger example comes courtesy ...... Read Full article on HadNews

Wild, Intricate Sculptures — Made Out of My Hair | Laetitia Ky | TED Laetitia Ky grew up in Ivory Coast longing for straight hair, like many African children. After a traumatic incident with her hair at 16, she decided to go back to her natural hair, and at 18, she came across a photo album showing the intricate hairstyles of African women in pre-colonial society, inspiring her to see her hair differently. This revelation led her to experiment with her own hair, using it as a medium to create wild, intricate sculptures. Originally creating sculptures for their aesthetic appeal, Ky was encouraged by the positive feedback she received online ...... Read Full article on HadNews

AI can help − and hurt − student creativity

Image
Teachers across the country are grappling with whether to view AI tools like ChatGPT as friend or foe in the classroom. My research shows that the answer isn’t always simple. It can be both. Teaching students to be creative thinkers rather than rely on AI for answers is the key to answering this question. That’s what my team and I found in our study on whether AI affects student creativity, published in the Journal of Creativity and representing scholars from the University of South Carolina, the University of California, Berkeley and Emerson College. In the study, we asked college students to brainstorm – without technology – all th...... Read Full article on HadNews

Creative minds are vulnerable to mental illness – but magicians escape the curse

Image
Can you think of a comedian, actor, poet or writer who suffered from mental illness? Maybe the actor Robin Williams or comedian Stephen Fry came to your mind. Perhaps it was the writer Virginia Woolf. All three have had well-documented struggles with bipolar disorder. Mental illnesses have been associated with creative thinking for a long time. For instance, mathematician John Nash’s battle with schizophrenia was immortalised in the film A Beautiful Mind (2001). Research supports this link, showing that people with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia are more likely to work in creative jobs. It also shows that creative groups, incl......
