Social media and political violence – how to break the cycle

Image
The attempted assassination of Donald Trump on July 13, 2024, added more fuel to an already fiery election season. In this case, political violence was carried out against the party that is most often found espousing it. The incident shows how uncontrollable political violence can be – and how dangerous the current times are for America. Part of the complication is the contentious and adversarial nature of American politics, of course. But technology makes it more difficult for Americans to understand sudden news developments. Gone are the days when only a handful of media outlets reported the news to broad swaths of society after rig...... Read Full article on HadNews

AI-driven demand for computer chips may lead to a transformation in global politics and security. – GretAi News

Image
A global race to build powerful computer chips that are essential for the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools could have a major impact on global politics and security. The US is currently leading the race in the design of these chips, also known as semiconductors. But most of the manufacturing is carried out in Taiwan. The debate has been fuelled by the call by Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT’s developer OpenAI, for a US$5 trillion to US$7 trillion (£3.9 trillion to £5.5 trillion) global investment to produce more powerful chips for the next generation of AI platforms. The amount of money Altman called for is more than the c...... Read Full article on HadNews

In 2024, the strength of our democracies against online disinformation campaigns will be put to the test – GretAi News

Image
Disinformation, sharing false information to deceive and mislead others, can take many forms. From edited “deepfake” videos made on smartphones to vast foreign-led information operations, politics and elections show how varied disinformation can be. Hailed as “the year of elections”, with the majority of the world’s population going to the polls, 2024 will also be a year of lessons learned, where we will see whether disinformation can truly subvert our political processes or if we are more resilient than we think. The dissemination of disinformation, as well as misleading content and methods, is not always high-tech. We often think about s...... Read Full article on HadNews

How can we combat the alarming increase of AI-generated falsehoods spread by algorithms? – GretAi News

Image
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools are supercharging the problem of misinformation, disinformation and fake news. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and various image, voice and video generators have made it easier than ever to produce content, while making it harder to tell what is factual or real. Malicious actors looking to spread disinformation can use AI tools to largely automate the generation of convincing and misleading text. This raises pressing questions: how much of the content we consume online is true and how can we determine its authenticity? And can anyone stop this? It’s not an idle concern. Organisations seeking...... Read Full article on HadNews

Can we be inoculated against climate misinformation? Yes – if we prebunk rather than debunk

Image
Last year, the world experienced the hottest day ever recorded, as we endured the first year where temperatures were 1.5°C warmer than the pre-industrial era. The link between extreme events and climate change is clearer than ever. But that doesn’t mean climate misinformation has stopped. Far from it. Misleading or incorrect information on climate still spreads like wildfire, even during the angry northern summer of 2023. Politicians falsely claimed the heatwaves were “normal” for summer. Conspiracy theorists claimed the devastating fires in Hawaii were ignited by government lasers. People producing misinformation have shifted tacti...... Read Full article on HadNews

How to empower youth to fight the threat of misinformation and disinformation

Image
The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2024 has issued a stark warning: misinformation and disinformation, primarily driven by deepfakes, are ranked as the most severe global short-term risks the world faces in the next two years. In October 2023, the Innovation council of Québec shared the same realization after months of consultations with experts and the public. This digital deception, which leverages artificial intelligence and, more recently generative AI, to create hyper-realistic fabrications, extends beyond being a technological marvel; it poses a profound societal threat. In response to the gap in effectively combat...... Read Full article on HadNews
