High-Speed Rail Finally Coming to the U.S.

Image
In late April, the Miami-based rail company Brightline Trains broke ground on a project that the company promises will give the United States its first dedicated, high-speed passenger rail service. The 350 kilometer (218 mile) corridor, which the company calls Brightline West, will connect Las Vegas to the the suburbs of Los Angeles. Brightline says it hopes to complete the project in time for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games that will take place in Los Angeles.Brightline has chosen Siemens American Pioneer 220 engines that will run at speeds averaging 165 kilometers per hour, with an advertised top speed of 320 km/h. That average speed still ...... Read Full article on HadNews

Will Liquid Circuits Enable Brain-Imitating Computers?

Image
Liquid circuits that mimic synapses in the brain can for the first time perform the kind of logical operations underlying modern computers, a new study finds. Near-term applications for these devices may include tasks such as image recognition, as well as the kinds of calculations underlying most artificial intelligence systems.Just as biological neurons both compute and store data, brain-imitating neuromorphic technology often combines both operations. These devices may greatly reduce the energy and time lost in conventional microchips shuttling data back and forth between processors and memory. They may also prove ideal for implementing n...... Five reasons to heat your home using infrared fabric

Image
Imagine heating your home from the ceiling, not from underfloor heating or radiators. Once installed like wallpaper, hi-tech infrared fabric emits heat in a similar way to the sun’s rays. This could be a logical way to add low-carbon heat into existing homes that need retrofitting to improve energy efficiency. Under the currently proposed legislative changes, no new home will be built with an incoming gas supply after 2025. If you’re buying a new home that’s been designed and built to the new Future Homes Standard, you’ve got little to worry about. But for older properties, retrofitting projects can be complex, inconvenient and expe...... Read Full article on HadNews
