Image
Pedigree cat breeding has long had its controversies but a new trend for cats bred to look like American bully XL dogs could be one of the most worrying fads yet. So-called “bully cats” originated in the US and are a result of mutant breeding. Unlike pedigree breeding, which focuses on keeping animals purebred, mutant breeding involves intentionally combining genetic mutations to create cats with a specific look. In this case, they mix the gene that causes hairlessness in sphynx cats with the gene responsible for the short legs of munchkin cats, making bully cats a munchkin-sphynx cross. A wildlife park has scrapped koala cuddles. Is it time for a blanket ban?

Image
A popular wildlife park in Brisbane has announced it will no longer offer “koala holds”, prompting questions about whether other captive animal facilities should follow. Koala handling has long been criticised by animal welfare advocates. They say koalas are naturally solitary, nocturnal animals that become stressed when placed in close proximity to humans – so hugging them is “completely unacceptable”. I study stress in animals, particularly marsupials – and I can confirm koala cuddles are detrimental to these animals. There’s a compelling evidenced-based argument for other zoos and wildlife parks to reassess their policies on koa...... Read Full article on HadNews

Why most people are right handed but left eyed

Image
Whether you’re left, right or ambidextrous, “handedness” is part of our identity. But a lot of people don’t realise that we have other biases too and they are not unique to humans. My colleagues and I have published a new study that shows aligning our biases in the same way as other people may have social benefits. Across different cultures, human populations have high levels of right-handedness (around 90%). We also have a strong population bias in how we recognise faces and their emotions. A significant majority of the population are faster and more accurate at recognising identities and emotions when they fall within the left visu...... Read Full article on HadNews

Why cats meow at humans more than each other

Image
This is a story that goes back thousands of years. Originally, cats were solitary creatures. This means they preferred to live and hunt alone, rather than in groups. Most of their social behaviour was restricted to mother-kitten interactions. Outside of this relationship, cats rarely meow at each other. However, as cats began to live alongside humans, these vocalisations took on new meanings. In many ways, when a cat meows at us, it’s as if they see us as their caregivers, much like their feline mothers. Cats probably first encountered humans roughly 10,000 years ago, when people began establishing permanent settlements. These sett...... Read Full article on HadNews
