Justin Bieber performs at India's mega wedding

Image
Justin Bieber has recently made headlines after performing at a lavish pre-wedding party for an Indian billionaire's son. The Canadian pop star serenaded the guests with a medley of his hit songs at Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s sangeet ceremony in Mumbai. Anant Ambani, the son of Mukesh Ambani, who is considered the richest man in Asia with an eye-watering net worth of $124 billion, according to Forbes, spared no expense for the extravagant event. The pre-wedding celebrations, which began in March, have already seen other A-list celebrities like Rihanna take the stage. However, despite the opulence and grandeur of the festivities, th...... When people are under economic stress, their pets suffer too – we found parts of Detroit that are animal welfare deserts

Image
Nearly two-thirds of U.S. households have at least one pet. More than ever before, companion animals are a part of life – particularly in cities, where the majority of Americans live. Cities offer access to many resources, but often it’s not distributed evenly. Some scholars describe parts of U.S. cities with few or no grocery stores as food deserts. Others have identified zones they call transit deserts, where reliable and convenient public transit is scarce or nonexistent. While the “desert” framing is controversial, there is little disagreement that access to goods and services in many U.S. cities is unequal. I have studied urban...... Read Full article on HadNews

I spent a decade helping Afghan girls make educational progress − and now the Taliban are using these 3 reasons to keep them out of school

Image
Before the collapse of the Afghan government in August 2021, girls’ access to education was steadily improving. In 2019, the Ministry of Education introduced the country’s first Girls Education Policy, known as the GEP. This policy sought to improve women’s literacy rates and access to education nationwide. The National Education Strategic Plan and the Girls’ Education Strategy were working to increase gender equity as well, through initiatives such as hiring 30,000 additional female teachers. For a decade, I was part of these efforts advocating for change. This all came to a halt when the Taliban took over and immediately outlawed...... Read Full article on HadNews

Philadelphia’s minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 an hour since 2009 – here’s why efforts to raise it have failed

Image
In Philadelphia, the poorest big city in the U.S., the minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 per hour for the past 15 years. That’s the minimum wage everywhere in Pennsylvania, and it matches the federal minimum wage. However, minimum wage workers in other big American cities earn significantly more: $16 an hour in New York and $15 an hour in Boston, for example. If Philadelphia’s $7.25-per-hour minimum wage were to keep up with inflation alone, it would need to be raised to at least $10.38 today, according to the federal Consumer Price Index inflation calculator. We asked Michael O’Bryan, founder of the Wealth and Work Futures Lab at...... Read Full article on HadNews

The true cost of food is far higher than what you spend at the checkout counter

Image
After several years of pandemic-driven price spikes at the grocery store, retail food price inflation is slowing down. That’s good news for consumers, especially those in low-income households, who spend a proportionally larger share of their income on food. But there’s more to the cost of food than what we pay at the store. Producing, processing, transporting and marketing food creates costs all along the value chain. Many are borne by society as a whole or by communities and regions. For example, farm runoff is a top cause of algae blooms and dead zones in rivers, lakes and bays. And food waste takes up one-fourth of the space in U...... Read Full article on HadNews

Marriage is not as effective an anti-poverty strategy as you’ve been led to believe

Image
Brides.com predicts that 2024 will be the “year of the proposal” as engagements tick back up after a pandemic-driven slowdown. Meanwhile, support for marriage has found new grist in recent books, including sociologist Brad Wilcox’s “Get Married: Why Americans Must Defy the Elites, Forge Strong Families and Save Civilization” and economist Melissa Kearney’s “The Two-Parent Privilege.” Kearney’s book was hailed by economist Tyler Cowen as possibly “the most important economics and policy book of this year.” This is not because it treads new ground but because, as author Kay Hymowitz writes, it breaks the supposed “taboo about an honest ......
