UK MPs call for law to protect musicians from AI deepfakes

Image
Musicians and other celebrities should be protected by a law that would ban AI-generated deepfakes in the U.K., MPs say. An All-Party Parliamentary Group on Music advocated for legislation that would include “a specific personality right to protect creators and artists from misappropriation and false endorsement.” The proposed law should also safeguard musicians against the potential of artificial intelligence to become “a destroyer of creators’ livelihoods,” according to a report the MPs released on Wednesday (May 1). The group’s chair, Labour MP Kevin Brennan, stressed the urgent need for politicians to “confront the danger that unfe...... Read Full article on HadNews

UK to criminalize creation of sexually explicit deepfakes

Image
The U.K.’s Ministry of Justice has announced that creating sexually explicit “deepfake” images will be made a criminal offense in England and Wales under a new law. Under the legislation, anyone making explicit images of an adult without their consent will face a criminal record and an unlimited fine. If the image is then shared more widely, the creator could then be sent to jail. The new law will mean creating sexually explicit deepfakes will be a criminal offense, even if there is no intention to distribute it. Simply creating such content with the aim of causing alarm, humiliation, or distress to the victim will constitute a crimina...... Read Full article on HadNews

6 ways you can use AI beyond generating text

Image
As more than half of Australian office workers report using generative artificial intelligence (AI) for work, we’re starting to see this technology affect every part of society, from banking and finance through to weather forecasting, health and medicine. Many people are now using AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to get advice, find information or summarise longer passages of text. But our recent research demonstrates how generative AI can be used for much more than this, returning results in different formats. On the one hand, AI tools are neutral – they can be used for good or ill depending on one’s intent. However, the mode...... Read Full article on HadNews

Are deepfakes illegal? AI's dark side explained

Image
We live in a world where anything seems possible with artificial intelligence. While there are significant benefits to AI in certain industries, such as healthcare, a darker side has also emerged. It has increased the risk of bad actors mounting new types of cyber-attacks, as well as manipulating audio and video for fraud and virtual kidnapping. Among these malicious acts, are deepfakes, which have become increasingly prevalent with this new technology. What are deepfakes? Deepfakes use AI and machine learning (AI/ML) technologies to produce convincing and realistic videos, images, audio, and text showcasing events that never occurred....... AI-driven demand for computer chips may lead to a transformation in global politics and security. – GretAi News

Image
A global race to build powerful computer chips that are essential for the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools could have a major impact on global politics and security. The US is currently leading the race in the design of these chips, also known as semiconductors. But most of the manufacturing is carried out in Taiwan. The debate has been fuelled by the call by Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT’s developer OpenAI, for a US$5 trillion to US$7 trillion (£3.9 trillion to £5.5 trillion) global investment to produce more powerful chips for the next generation of AI platforms. The amount of money Altman called for is more than the c...... Read Full article on HadNews

In 2024, the strength of our democracies against online disinformation campaigns will be put to the test – GretAi News

Image
Disinformation, sharing false information to deceive and mislead others, can take many forms. From edited “deepfake” videos made on smartphones to vast foreign-led information operations, politics and elections show how varied disinformation can be. Hailed as “the year of elections”, with the majority of the world’s population going to the polls, 2024 will also be a year of lessons learned, where we will see whether disinformation can truly subvert our political processes or if we are more resilient than we think. The dissemination of disinformation, as well as misleading content and methods, is not always high-tech. We often think about s...... Read Full article on HadNews

UK election could be influenced by AI deepfakes

Image
Deepfake videos generated by artificial intelligence (AI) could be mobilized by bad actors to influence the upcoming UK election a top government minister has warned. Home Secretary James Cleverly said it could create a ‘perfect storm’ before Brits head to the polls, likely before the end of 2024. Cleverly – in preparation for a meeting with Silicon Valley bosses – said that the time for deepfake videos disrupting elections across the world is well and truly here and ‘already in play’. He went on to warn British voters opinions may be swayed if their social media platforms are filled with convincing AI-generated deepfakes. These forger...... Read Full article on HadNews

New tool helps you fight back against deepfakes

Image
As the fight against deepfakes heats up, one company is helping us fight back. Hugging Face, a company that hosts AI projects and machine learning tools has developed a range of  “state of the art technology” to combat “the rise of AI-generated ‘fake’ human content” like deepfakes and voice scams. This range of technology includes a collection of tools labeled ‘Provenance, Watermarking and Deepfake Detection.’ There are tools that not only detect deepfakes but also help by embedding watermarks in audio files, LLMs, and images. Introducing Hugging Face Margaret Mitchell, researcher and chief ethics scientist at Hugging Face, announced t...... Read Full article on HadNews

protecting your image online is the key to fighting them

Leanne Manas is a familiar face on South African televisions. Towards the end of 2023 the morning news presenter’s face showed up somewhere else: in bogus news stories and fake advertisements in which “she” appeared to promote various products or get-rich-quick schemes. It quickly emerged that Manas had fallen victim to “deepfaking”. Deepfakes involve the use of artificial intelligence tools to manipulate images, video and audio. And it doesn’t require cutting-edge technical know-how. Software like FaceSwap and ZaoApp, which can be downloaded for free, mean that anybody can create deepfakes. Deepfakes were initially used in the en...... Read Full article on HadNews

“I Died That Day” Lawmakers in the US are getting calls from dead kids

Image
Called “very strange indeed.” Lawmakers in the US are getting calls from dead kids, causing additional dilemmas in the legality issue of deepfakes. Commencing on the sixth anniversary of the Parkland school tragedy, which claimed 17 lives, a number of deepfake, automated calls from the kids who were killed are all part of an effort to increase public awareness of gun safety and advocate for stricter gun laws. However, the topic of this piece isn’t gun control; instead, it’s a pivotal point in artificial intelligence and the use of deepfakes to disseminate messages and communicate with the dead — but will this usage turn out to be illeg...... How to empower youth to fight the threat of misinformation and disinformation

Image
The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2024 has issued a stark warning: misinformation and disinformation, primarily driven by deepfakes, are ranked as the most severe global short-term risks the world faces in the next two years. In October 2023, the Innovation council of Québec shared the same realization after months of consultations with experts and the public. This digital deception, which leverages artificial intelligence and, more recently generative AI, to create hyper-realistic fabrications, extends beyond being a technological marvel; it poses a profound societal threat. In response to the gap in effectively combat...... Read Full article on HadNews
