Olga Loiek, a University of Pennsylvania student, launched a YouTube channel in November last year to share her lifestyle and experiences. With the ban looming, TikTok’s parent company ByteDance is trying to diversify by promoting its other social media platform named Lemon8. According to the New York Post, the company is paying influencers to suggest the other app via TikTok. Often described as being similar to Pinterest, Lemon8 allows users to share photos and look for inspiration from others. It’s said to be very similar to the Chinese social media app Xiaohongshu. A former Google software engineer has been charged over the theft of trade secrets from the Alphabet company whilst working covertly with two other firms based in China. Linwei Ding, also known as Leon Ding, was charged this week by a federal jury in San Francisco on four counts of trade secret theft, which could see the Chinese national punished with up to 10 years in prison. Meta has removed several Facebook accounts that posed as US military families. The fake accounts on Facebook and Instagram were aimed at US audiences and were all located in China, according to Meta’s security researchers. Meta’s report stated that accounts mainly posted about ‘military themes’, including US air carriers; as well as critiquing the ‘US foreign policy towards Taiwan and Israel and its support os Ukraine’.
