Astronauts don’t eat enough because food tastes bland in space. We’re trying to work out why

Image
Astronauts often report that the joy of eating is lost in space. Food that tastes fabulous on Earth may become bland and boring in orbit. In fact, despite carefully designed diets, space travellers often struggle to eat enough to meet their energy needs. What’s going on here? We carried out some experiments on Earth to find out, using virtual reality (VR) and a simulated spacecraft environment to study how space travel might affect a person’s sense of smell and experience of food. We discovered that some smells seem much more intense in a space-like environment – and earlier theories about how zero gravity affects the body can’t be...... Read Full article on HadNews

Junk food is promoted online to appeal to kids and target young men, our study shows

Image
The Australian government has been investigating whether we should ban unhealthy food advertising online, and how it could work. In the United Kingdom, a ban on unhealthy food and drink advertising online will start in October 2025. We recently used the Australian Ad Observatory to investigate targeted junk-food ads on Facebook in Australia. Our study finds that unhealthy food and drinks are promoted in ways designed to appeal to parents and carers of children, and children themselves. Additionally, young men in our study were being targeted by fast-food ads. Kids, young people and parents should be aware of the strategies online ad...... Read Full article on HadNews

How was popcorn discovered? An archaeologist on its likely appeal for people in the Americas millennia ago

Curious Kids is a series for children of all ages. If you have a question you’d like an expert to answer, send it to curiouskidsus@theconversation.com. How was popcorn discovered? – Kendra, age 11, Penn Yan, New York You have to wonder how people originally figured out how to eat some foods that are beloved today. The cassava plant is toxic if not carefully processed through multiple steps. Yogurt is basically old milk that’s been around for a while and contaminated with bacteria. Why are grocery bills so high? A new study looks at the science behind food price reporting

Image
Rising food costs are squeezing Canadians around the country. Nearly everyone is feeling the pinch, and it’s not just an inconvenience — high food prices are a major threat to food security for many Canadians. Understanding why food prices are so high and why they are changing is critical to the well-being of our society. Unfortunately, consensus on why food price are so high is in short supply. Explanations given in reports like Canada’s Food Price Report and the news media range widely, from the war in Ukraine to supply chain issues to the carbon tax. Each year it seems the key drivers change, and if the growing consumer boycott of...... Read Full article on HadNews

Today’s record prices don’t reflect the true cost of food – but there are alternatives to asking consumers to pay even more

Image
The boss of a British supermarket has claimed that the “era of cheap food is over”. But what he calls cheap, many people still find expensive. Rising food costs have been one of the key drivers of soaring UK inflation over the last few years, and some products, like olive oil, have reached record prices. For the most deprived fifth of UK households, it is estimated that they would need to spend an 50% of their disposable income to eat a healthy diet. But whether or not you think food is too expensive or too cheap, the reality is that neither customers nor retailers are paying the true price of food. For what we eat now incurs signi...... More price rises and empty shelves on the cards as UK brings in Brexit border checks

Image
New import checks on foods arriving from the EU could affect supplies at Britain’s local delis, high-street greengrocers or independent cafes. Worse, they could lead to shortages that affect the very viability of these businesses. So what are these new checks and what does it all mean for consumers in the UK? Three years ago, the UK departed the EU single market. This meant that the border checks applied to goods coming into the UK from other nations would also apply to goods from members of the EU. The UK government had previously delayed imposing EU import checks to ease the burden on UK businesses. This was largely due to financia...... Read Full article on HadNews

Gazans are paying the price

Image
On Monday, the European Union’s foreign policy chief accused Israel of using starvation as a weapon of war and provoking famine in Gaza. Israel denies the allegations, which are some of the strongest words we have heard from a western power about the situation in Gaza since October. The EU statement comes on the heels of a UN-backed report that warns that more than one million people — half of Gaza’s population — face catastrophic starvation conditions. The report compiled through a partnership of more than 19 international agencies, including the United Nations and the Canadian International Development Agency, goes on to say tha...... In response to these issues, activists, policymakers and corporate executives have been exploring new strategies for making our food systems more resilient and sustainable. Regenerative agricultural strategies, in particular, can reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from food...... Read Full article on HadNews
