Google signs deal to build seven nuclear reactors to satisfy AI energy hunger

Image
Google has recently made a groundbreaking deal to build seven nuclear reactors in order to satisfy the energy demands for its artificial intelligence (AI) projects. The tech giant is at the forefront of the AI revolution, which is reshaping our world at breakneck speed. The deal comes as the capabilities of AI continue to expand and evolve, requiring more and more energy to power the immense computational processes involved. The possibilities with AI seem endless, but the energy required to power these technologies is a limiting factor. By constructing these nuclear reactors, Google aims to secure a stable and sustainable energy source to f...... Read Full article on HadNews

Electric vehicles will start to cut emissions and improve air quality in our cities – but only once they’re common

Image
Electric vehicles are often seen as the panacea to cutting emissions – and air pollution – from transport. Is this view correct? Yes – but only once uptake accelerates. Despite the recent boom in EV purchases, they’re still a tiny minority of the cars on the road. We would get more immediate benefit by focusing on electrifying buses, which are a surprisingly large source of air pollution, and finding ways to cut rapidly growing emissions from diesel trucks. While the electricity sector still produces the largest share of emissions in Australia (32.3%), emissions are falling. But emissions from transport (21.1%) are already the third...... Why batteries come in so many sizes and shapes

Image
If you’ve looked in your utility drawer lately, you may have noticed the various shapes, sizes and types of batteries that power your electronic devices. First, there are the round, non-rechargeable button cells for your watches and small items. There’s also the popular AA and AAA cylindrical batteries for calculators, clocks and remotes. Then you have the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries in your laptops and phones. And don’t forget about the lead-acid battery in your car. I’m a professor who studies batteries and electrochemistry. To understand why batteries come in many different sizes and shapes – and serve many purposes – look to...... Read Full article on HadNews

Unveiling 3 Cosmic Enigmas: Exploring a Potential New Force | Alex Keshavarzi | TED - Video

Image
3 Mysteries of the Universe — and a New Force That Might Explain Them | Alex Keshavarzi | TED In the world of particle physics, there are still many mysteries about the universe that scientists are trying to unravel. Three major mysteries include dark energy, dark matter, and the matter-antimatter asymmetry. Dark energy, which makes up 74 percent of the energy content of the universe, is responsible for the accelerating expansion of the universe. Dark matter, comprising 21 percent of the energy content, is necessary to explain the gravitational effects on galaxies. The matter-antimatter asymmetry, where antimatter seems to have disappeared, ...... Read Full article on HadNews

April’s eclipse will mean interruptions in solar power generation, which could strain electrical grids

Image
During the most recent total solar eclipse visible in the U.S., on Aug. 21, 2017, the skies darkened as the Moon crossed in front of the Sun. It blocked out all sunlight – except for that from a golden ring visible around the Moon’s shape, called the corona. Not surprisingly, solar power generation across North America plummeted for several hours, from the first moment the Moon began to obscure the Sun to when the Sun’s disk was clear again. On April 8, 2024, another total solar eclipse will track across the U.S., causing perhaps an even greater loss of solar power generation. Although this will be the second total solar eclipse visib...... Read Full article on HadNews

The Energy-Saving Lifestyle of Our Ancient Ancestors, According to Daniel Lieberman - Video

Image
Our ancient ancestors weren’t jacked. They were energy savers. | Daniel Lieberman Daniel Lieberman's video "Our ancient ancestors weren’t jacked. They were energy savers" delves into the cost of keeping our bodies running and explains why physical activity was limited for our ancient ancestors. Lieberman explains that basic, essential bodily functions require a significant amount of energy. Even when doing nothing, our bodies spend about 1,400 calories per day just to keep us alive. This cost of maintaining our bodies helps to explain why we tend to avoid unnecessary physical activity. Our ancestors had to conserve energy and didn't waste i...... Read Full article on HadNews

Read Full article on HadNews

Five reasons to heat your home using infrared fabric

Image
Imagine heating your home from the ceiling, not from underfloor heating or radiators. Once installed like wallpaper, hi-tech infrared fabric emits heat in a similar way to the sun’s rays. This could be a logical way to add low-carbon heat into existing homes that need retrofitting to improve energy efficiency. Under the currently proposed legislative changes, no new home will be built with an incoming gas supply after 2025. If you’re buying a new home that’s been designed and built to the new Future Homes Standard, you’ve got little to worry about. But for older properties, retrofitting projects can be complex, inconvenient and expe...... Read Full article on HadNews

Russia's energy empire: Putin and the rise of Gazprom | DW Documentary

Image
Russia's energy empire: Putin and the rise of Gazprom | DW Documentary For decades, European countries have been dependent on Russian gas imports. And they did it to themselves. The biggest culprit? Germany. Only after Russia declared war on Ukraine did the German government realize that Russia has been using gas as a weapon for a long time. How did this come about? What is Russian President Vladimir Putin's plan? The films take a look behind the scenes of the Russian gas monopoly Gazprom. They show the genesis of an empire: from the collapse of the Soviet Union to the Russian goldrush, the restrictions imposed by newly-elected President ...... Read Full article on HadNews

Do we want a wind farm outside our window? What Australians think about the net zero transition

Image
A paradox lies at the heart of Australian public opinion about climate change. While there is clear general support for substantial government action to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, there is also strong concern about the local impacts of new renewable energy infrastructure. The rise of protest groups in regional Australia objecting to the installation of wind farms and transmission lines, in particular, presents a serious challenge to the Albanese government in communicating the importance of the net zero transition to the public. In principle it seems that Australians strongly support this transition. In a poll for the Aust...... Read Full article on HadNews

"Exploring the Potential of a Simple Brick as the Next Great Battery" | John O'Donnell | TED - Video

Image
Can a Simple Brick Be the Next Great Battery? | John O'Donnell | TED In the TED talk "Can a Simple Brick Be the Next Great Battery?" John O'Donnell presents an inspiring perspective on the potential of using bricks as a revolutionary solution for cutting down carbon emissions. He starts by addressing the significance of fire in our lives, particularly in industrial production, which is known to be a major contributor to fossil fuel use and carbon emissions globally. O'Donnell emphasizes the need to decarbonize our industries without deindustrializing, and introduces the concept of electrified industrial heat as a solution to this challe......
